Dear Cindy, Congratulations -- having documentary materials from your family is a rare thing, and you are lucky to have them! Unfortunately, it would be dangerous to assume your quilt's age without doing more research. I cannot tell you how many stories I have heard as an appraiser that do not match the age of the accompanying quilt. You also need to research further whether this ancestor was actually the one to make the quilt. Is it signed? (I am crossing my fingers, hoping that you will say yes.) What you need is a appraisal of the quilt by a professional, preferably one who specializes in textiles. Because I am both a member of the American Quilter's Society-certified appraisers, as well as the PAAQT, I would certainly recommend their services. Take a look at http://www.quiltappraisers.org , and you'll find listings for people hopefully in your state. The appraiser can give you a better idea of the quilt's approximate age, as well as tell you whether it fits into your ancestor's lifetime. Good luck to you, Cindy Brick |
